"Nature has made men so equal in the faculties of the body and mind, as that though there be found one stronger in body, or of quicker mind than another, yet when all is reckoned together, the difference between man and man is not so considerable." ~Thomas Hobbes (364)

About Hobbes

Founded in 1657, Hobbes University is located in our founder's hometown of Wiltshire, England. Thomas Hobbes founded the University only a few years after returning to England after living in France; he left due to his heavy prejudices against the Roman Catholic Church. His greatest work, the Leviathan, has become the center of our approach to education and leadership in a university setting.

At Hobbes University, all students are equal in mind and body. We hope to train your minds, bodies and souls to be the strongest possible through a rigorous and demanding education. Here at Hobbes, we strive for a constant state of peace, hoping to aid each student in overcoming the brutish state of nature to achieve higher goals. Unlike many other colleges and universities, the Hobbesian approach to education and learning is as follows:

- The essence of humankind distinguishes them from animals. Apply your essence in everything you do.
- Strive to observe covenants between yourself, you and your classmates, and you and your professors, such that no higher authority need to check on you. Residential Assistants/Advisors do not play a role on the Hobbes campus. We believe each student should strive for peace without compulsion.
- Social contract applies. This is made between you and your fellow students; here at Hobbes, your individuality will determine your personal success. How you make and utilize relationships is entirely up to you. (Ebenstein, 359-363)

Religious Practice @ Hobbes

Hobbes is not an institution affiliated with any religion. Our founder, Thomas Hobbes, had no religion. While we will not dissuade you from practicing your personal religious beliefs, please realize that Hobbes himself felt religion was a mere distraction from larger civil obedience. The word of the secular law of the University comes before religious text. Should this pose a problem for you as a potential or current student, please contact us. (358)

Moral Virtue and Character Expectations at Hobbes

After becoming a student at Hobbes the following are moral expectations we set forth for all Hobbes graduates:
- Equity
- Justice
- Gratitude
- Understanding the Emotive Theory of Value, for all terms describing character must be tailored to and appreciated by those who use them.
- Outer conformity to the law in order to remain upstanding citizens and subjects
- Competitive nature

Personal Discipline Policy @ Hobbes

Any individual or campus group who interferes with the overall success of the University will be dismissed immediately. No group or majority should influence the personal behaviors of individuals; if this should occur, proper disciplinary actions will be taken. Rules set forth by the University are just – for no laws, as our founder mentions, can be unjust.

We follow the law of nature and the right of nature, which can be outlined as:
a.)Law of nature: A man is forbidden to do that which is destructive of his life or takes away the means of preserving the same, and to omit that by which he thinks it may be best preserved.

b.)Right of nature: There is always the right for you to defend yourself, no one can take away this right.

Student Life

Hobbes University prides itself on understanding the division between operating in the interest of the general public, or in the interest of those in power. Because our founder supported the absolute state, efficiency is at the center of life at Hobbes University. All major clubs and organizations are led by one president or leader, chosen by the Administration. It is most convenient and most efficient for student organizations to be handled in this manner; if larger groups of students all attempted to take charge of one organization, it would undoubtedly fail. While club leaders at Hobbes, of which there are over 300, are top administrators of their respective organization, they are in no way to limit the success of the students who join their causes.

This is also true of our Student Government, which operates under the wise words of Thomas Hobbes, outlining great leadership: “By mutual covenants with one another have made themselves every one the author, to the end he may use the strength and means of them all, as he shall think expedient for their peace and common defense.” The Student Government functions to:
- Maintain its power and the standing of the University
- Maintain order and security for the benefit of all students and faculty
- Maintain equality for all students before all University codes
- Maintain a single or group of effective leaders, but never to become "spellbinders, propagandists, or showmen."
- Accept the inevitability of discontent among students, for that is nature, and improve these concerns.
- Govern the student body justly, for if they fail in this respect, the students and faculty have the rights to resist when "life is at stake." However, such drastic situations should never arise. (369-374)
